Siena offers many choices to those who want to celebrate their endless love with a civil union.
Most civil weddings in Siena are celebrated in Palazzo Pubblico: the symbol of the city’s power towers over the famous Piazza del Campo. The Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, also known as the Town Hall, was built between 1297 and 1310 and it is considered a perfect example of civil Gothic architecture worldwide. Let’s have a look to the many astonishing rooms where to celebrate your civil union in Siena, to give a touch of history to your endless love!
Experiencing a wedding in the Loggia dei Nove is an awe-inspiring event, immersed in history and magnificence. This marvelous space serves as a living room, offering breathtaking views of the Sienese valley, including the majestic Monte Amiata in the distance. The Loggia, situated on the fourth floor of the Palazzo Pubblico, can be directly accessed from the renowned Piazza del Campo.
Supported by four pillars, it overlooks the extraordinary panorama of the Piazza del Mercato and the southern region of the Siena province. Its construction dates to 1348 and was initially intended to be a recreational space for the Nine, who were the rulers of the Sienese Republic and were allowed to leave the palace only on holidays.
Prepare to be captivated by the Sala del Concistoro, an awe-inspiring hall nestled within the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena, situated in the heart of Piazza del Campo and serving as the Municipality’s seat. Drenched in history, this monumental hall on the palazzo’s first floor boasts magnificent frescoes by Domenico Beccafumi, starting with the intricately decorated vaults. Initially designated as the meeting place for the Consistory, the Republic of Siena’s supreme Magistrate, it has carried the name ever since.
The Sala del Mappamondo, located on the first floor of Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, is a grand and resplendent room adorned with frescoes dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It served as the primary meeting place for the General Council of the Republic and is the largest chamber within the palazzo.
The hall features an impressive wooden roof, a rectangular layout, and opulent decorations, including elegant arches, large Gothic windows, and frescoed walls. Its name derives from a globe that once graced the room, created by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, depicting the Sienese Republic with images representing various localities. Though the globe is no longer present, the hall still bears its name in honor of Lorenzetti’s famous work.
Celebrate your wedding with a civil ceremony in the enchanting and evocative setting of the Teatro dei Rinnovati. Nestled inside the Palazzo Comunale, right at the heart of Piazza del Campo, this theater’s foyer is a true gem.
Back in 1560, a momentous occasion unfolded when Grand Duke Cosimo I dei Medici visited Siena. In preparation to welcome the illustrious guest, a bold decision was made: the hall of the Major Council of the Sienese Republic, constructed in 1343, was transformed into a splendid performance venue. Thus, the Teatro dei Rinnovati was born, designed by the talented Bartolomeo Neroni, also known as il Riccio.
In addition, Siena also offers other possible venues outside the Town Hall in which hold an unforgettable wedding ceremony.
The Historical Hall of the Municipal Library of the Intronati, known as the “Sala Storica della Biblioteca“, stands as one of Siena’s oldest cultural institutions, primarily serving as a study and consultation space for literary materials. The Biblioteca degli Intronati underwent a distinct evolution, transitioning from its origins as a cultural attraction to becoming a municipal establishment.
The Hall of Palazzo Patrizi is situated within a historic edifice in Siena, located at Via di Città 75. This impressive building once served as the city residence for the noble Patrizi family, who later relocated to Rome and Naples during the Renaissance period. Presently, it houses the esteemed Accademia degli Intronati, an institution founded in 1525.
The conference hall inside the palace is now under the ownership of the municipality, having undergone recent restoration that preserved its exquisite ornaments and intricately frescoed ceilings. With a prime location, the Hall of Palazzo Patrizi offers a charming view of Via di Città, conveniently positioned right next to the renowned Piazza del Campo. Additionally, the rear falcade showcases a distinctive Gothic appearance, facing Casato di Sotto.
The Hall of Palazzo Patrizi stands as a splendid testament to Siena’s rich history and architectural heritage, providing a captivating setting for various events and activities.
The ancient Fonti di Pescaia are situated outside the Porta di Camollia, nestled between the hills of the modern liberty quarters of San Prospero and San Basilio. This gate was closed in 1369 out of fear of potential enemy invasions. Today, remnants of this ancient gate can still be observed in the apse of the beautiful Fontegiusta church, which was erected near the former Pescaia gate.
The Fonti di Pescaia, well-preserved and recently restored, boast three splendid arches. Unfortunately, during the 17th and early 18th centuries, an additional house was constructed, disrupting the original architectural harmony of the site. Despite this addition, the Fonti di Pescaia retain their charm and historic significance as a testament to Siena’s past.
There are also many Tuscan typical villas where it is possible to celebrate your civil wedding.
For example, this charming and exclusive Renaissance Villa is a 10 minutes’ drive from the city, and it allows big wedding parties. You will fall in love with the panoramic view of Siena, the Torre del Mangia and the Duomo from the Italian garden adorned with clay pots of lemon and orange trees.
